Calder Highway – Road Safety Treatments

Civil Design

Calder Highway, Big Hill

TPD was engaged by Vicroads to produce detailed design plans for road safety improvement works on the Calder Highway (north bound) at Big Hill.

The stretch of road had a history of run-off road crashes and a preliminary project scope was developed by Vicroads in order to obtain funding for the works. TPD then conducted extensive on-site surveys to finalise a detailed scope, designed appropriate treatments for 10 separate high risk sites, and produced construction issue plans to hand back over to Vicroads for delivery.

The preferred treatment for this project was wire rope safety barrier due to its re-directive and low impact attributes. As such this was the most common design solution, with some guard fence, culvert extensions, and tree removal also used where wire rope was not practicable. To enable construction some shoulder and formation widening was required for which TPD was able to use their road engineering expertise to specify design pavements where necessary.

The final treatment protects errant drivers from numerous side road hazards including trees, steep batters and large culverts.
