Prouses Road Intersection Design
City of Greater Bendigo
Prouses Road, Jackass Flat
TPD was engaged by the City of Greater Bendigo to design an intersection upgrade at the intersection of Prouses Road and Bright Street in Jackass Flat, along with shoulder widening and associated drainage works along a 900m stretch of Prouses Road.
The existing intersection had a history of crashes and was insufficient to cater for the increased traffic volumes that had resulted from increased development of Jackass Flat and Eaglehawk. The solution to alleviate congestion and increase safety for road users was to create a channelised right turn lane for vehicles entering Bright Street. The intersection was reconfigured with new traffic islands, kerb and channel, drainage and line-marking. A full set of construction drawings were created for handover to the client who managed construction of the works.
The project brief stated that the intersection had to cater for cars, buses, semi-trailers and cyclists. TPD ran turning movement checks to ensure the intersection was suitable for all design vehicles and included a dedicated cycle lane through the intersection for cyclist safety.
As part of the works a cross culvert for the California Gully Creek was re-designed and extended because the existing culvert did not have capacity for major storm events. TPD analysed a large mixed zone catchment to design the culvert to the required design storm and specified the appropriate culvert and rock beaching arrangement required.
